Female Competitors - Don't Change Your Name
One of the most difficult aspects of personal promotion is achieving name recognition. So it seems to me to be a mistake for women in competition or the physique industry to change their names when they get married. If you become known as "Betty Boop" and you marry Micky Mouse it is not a good idea to promote yourself as "Betty Mouse" or even "Betty Boop-Mouse."
There are several reasons for this:
1. Once you become known your name is your "trade mark." You simply confuse people by changing it.
2. It caters to that old idea that a woman's highest purpose in life is to get married and that her identity is subordinate to that of her husband.
3. Not using your married name professionally means you can travel and check into hotels under this name and be less likely to be bothered by overly agressive fans.
4. Nobody newly married or about to be married likes to think about this - but with roughly half of marriages ending in divorce there is a good chance you will be too. We have the lesson of Pamela (Anderson) Lee and Farrah Fawcett-Majors to instruct us. And Cathy (Lefrancoise) Priest.
Of course, if you become known initially under your married name that is different. Again, the principle applies that you "dance with the one that brung you" - once you become known by a name stick with it.
After all, Elizabeth Taylor remained known by that name throughout her career. She was never billed as Elizabeth Taylor Hilton Wilding Todd Fisher Burton Burton Warner Fortensky. Or any variation of the above.

Yep.
The first time I saw these names, I thought, "What the heck is a Brant-Peckham (or a Kudla-Donnelly)? One sounds like a piece of farm equipment, the other sounds like an air conditioning unit.
Hyphenating, in my opinion, is even worse than a name swap. And for those that mistakenly think that hyphenating to include the married name will throw off the schmoes, well, they're mistaken (I guess I said that twice, huh). It will have little, if any effect on how people behave. You're still the masturbation fuel pinned up on their wall - their attitude about you and behaviour toward you isn't going to change just because you're married (because the reality is that there are lots of people that don't seem to care that they're married - and you might be one of those).

It is never a mistake to take your husband's name when you get married. That's just silly. If a woman wants to do that, I would think her marriage means more to her than physique promotion or name recognition. At least I would hope so.
In the scheme of things, a committment lasts a heck of alot longer than a career in this sport. LOL. And is much more important.
Now if his last name is Wanker or Hyman I might reconsider.

Peg, I totally agree with you in the context of Real Life.
What we're talking about here is that fact that a person's name is, in fact, their brand, and the value of the brand is immensely diluted when it's changed.
Bill's point is to keep your name in terms of the public, the fanbase (website), etc...Use your married name the rest of the time.
There are only so many Artists Known as Prince and Puff Diddlies in the world...

Perhaps you should read the whole thread to understand what it's about before you respond.... it has nothing to do with an "account" or email.....
